October 16th General Club Meeting Program

This month’s presenter will be Orville K. Beach, W6BI. Orv is a member of the Simi Settlers Amateur Radio Club of Simi Valley, California. He hereby announces to the world that he is All Digital, All the Time! As an example of All Digital, All the Time, look at his operating style: CW for four years RTTY for 11 years (teletypes, homebrewed terminal units, then homebrewed computer interfaces and programs) VHF Packet radio for about 10 years – helped build up a packet network down the California coast and east to Tucson QRT off and on for a couple of years Pactor for 2 years PSK31 off and on for a couple of years 2014.. Digital Mesh radio on the microwave bands Orv brags that his last HF SSB QSO was in 1975… Although he enjoys digital more than analog radio, he says that his Principal interests are technical as well as ragchewing. Which brings us to Orv’s topic that he is looking forward to presenting to us at our Club meeting. If you haven’t already heard of it, you will surely hear about it during his presentation. It is called, “Digital Mesh Networking for Amateur Radio.” Come with an open mind and let Orv fill it with lots of interesting concepts that are probably new to you. We hold our Club meetings at the Goleta Union School District, 401 N. Fairview Ave. in Goleta, right across the street from the Goleta Library. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the meeting starts at 7:30 PM. Post expires at 7:14am on Saturday October 17th, 2015 but will still be available in the archives.

SBARC Assists With Fiesta Parade Communications

A yearly tradition for SBARC, we are providing communications for Santa Barbara’s annual Fiesta Parade! Left, is special events operations coordinator Rick KG6VLB (facing backwards?) riding along with Parade Marshall 1. This year marks the 91st anniversary of the Fiesta Historical Parade. It is unique to Santa Barbara and features floats depicting episodes from the history of the state and city. Descendants of local Native Americans, Spanish Pioneers, the Native Sons and Daughters of the Golden West, and local service clubs and organizations all reenact historical scenes. It is one of the nation’s largest equestrian parades, featuring over 600 horses, as well as many antique carriages, coaches and wagons. SBARC members and other amateur radio volunteers monitor the parade route from the beginning to end from the west end of Cabrillo Boulevard, up to State and Sola Streets. Viva La Fiesta

It’s that time again and Rick is looking for interested HAM Operators who wish to participate in the Fiesta Parade and then the ever so famous post parade Bar-B-Que. You have your choice of two tickets to the Rodeo OR the meal at the BBQ.  The parade is on Friday, August 7th and it starts at noon.  If you are interested please let Rick know as soon as you can.  He is running behind on organizing this because of so many events going on in such a short period of time. This has always been the fun event so we hope you can join in the fun. Contact: Rick Whitaker at rickwhtr@cox.net Also, the Santa Barbara Triathlon is coming on August 22, so please keep your schedule open to help if you can!

2015 Bazaar Big Success

Darryl, KF6DI – Thank you to each of you good folks — Eric Satterlee, KG6WXC, from Port Hueneme; Bill Gross, W6FF, from Goleta; Bill Talanian, W1UUQ, from Goleta; Harry Rouse, K6PDQ, from Goleta; Ken Alker, KA6KEN, from Goleta; Bob Muller, KB6CTX, from Santa Barbara; Dorothy Oksner, K6DSO, from Carpinteria; Rick Whitaker, KG6VLB, from Santa Barbara and Tom Saunders, N6YX, from Goleta — we had a fun, successful and profitable Bazaar! Starting many weeks ago with the gathering of Junque for our sale from as far away as the Satellite Amateur Radio Club’s Swapfest and Barbecue, from our Club Station at the Red Cross and from homes around the area and moving a whole lot of it from our Club’s storage container Friday afternoon and then actually taking it home with us overnight and then bright and early Saturday morning bringing it all over to the Goleta Union School District and unloading it from our vehicles and laying it all out in the rear parking lot there in a pretty orderly fashion and then continuing right into selling of much of it to our Club members and visitors so that they might enhance their collections, somehow we actually cleared around $1,250. Hey, that’s pretty good for a Saturday morning. It even outdid last year’s effort. You know, if it weren’t for each of you pitching in and helping in whatever manner you did, this wouldn’t have happened. You were all terrific and I want you to know how much I appreciate what you did. So much of what makes a successful event is often unseen by the members. But that’s fine. I have always felt that the ones having the most fun were the ones who rolled up their sleeves and pitched in for the effort. It was a very nice day. The weather was delightful, the doughnuts were delicious, the drinks were cold and the coffee was hot. Without naming names, you each helped out in your own way and we all appreciate what you did. I got a bit of sunshine on me which felt good. Around noontime you might have seen Mr. John Moon stuffing what looked like tons of unsold test equipment into his van to be carted off to parts unknown. For that he crossed our palms with a couple hundred bucks. Pretty good for stuff no one would want. For many years he has come to… Continue reading

Operators Needed for SB 100 Run

Ham operators are needed for the grueling Santa Barbara 100 wilderness run in July. The event begins on Friday July 10 at 18:00 local, and extends through Sunday July 12. This event takes place in the backcountry of the Santa Ynez Valley and is the toughest run of the season. Operations will take place mostly on 2m. There are many stations and times to fill, so be sure to get in early for the best selection. If you have never done an event, Rick needs you as a relief operator. This is a good opportunity to learn how this is done. The event will be using the Rover repeater so make sure you have the frequencies in your radio. Click here for more information. Help is available at the Club Station. Contact Rick – KG6VLB by email (preferred) rickwhtr@cox.net or by phone at 964-5440 Post expires at 2:00pm on Sunday July 12th, 2015 but will still be available in the archives.

Field Day 2015 – UPDATED

Field Day is an intense 24 hours of ham operations. SBARC will have the Rover set up at the Camino Real Marketplace near the movie theater. Setup will begin on Friday June 26th at 12:30 hours and operating will begin on Saturday June 27th at 11:00 hours and continue nonstop until Sunday June 28th at 11:00 hours. Operators are needed for 2 hour time slots during these times. Operation will be on SSB, CW and Digital Modes. People will also be needed to meet, greet, and explain amateur radio to the general public. Contact Tom – N6YX at 805-967-7351 or tsaund@cox.net to sign up for this fun event! UPDATE – June 10, 2015 – From Tom N6YX You are welcome to join the SBARC Field Day event. Field Day starts 11 AM, Saturday, June 27 and runs for 24 hours. We will be located at Camino Real Market Place, about 70 yards south of the movie theatre. The club will operate as a 1A station (single transmitter). We will make hundreds of short HF contacts to stations in US, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii. Contacts will be made using phone, CW, and digital modes. This is a great learning experience for new as well as old hams. We need help with setup Friday afternoon, operators, loggers, and greeters for the public. Setup involves the assembly and mounting of an antenna on the club’s Rover van. We will check out the equipment to make sure everything is working properly before we start operating Saturday morning. Loggers enter contact information into a computer. It is a very simple program that is used to log station call sign, operating classification, and ARRL section information from each contact. Technician class and unlicensed individuals can operate as long as there is a properly licensed ham as the control operator. You do not need any experience to be an operator or logger. This is a great outreach event for the public. This is why we chose the Camino Real mall for this event. We get a lot of interest from the public. Greeters answer simple questions about ham radio and get interested people to sign up for more information or to start a license class. You are also welcome to stop by and check it out. Post expires at 11:00am on Sunday June 28th, 2015 but will still be available in the archives.
