Club Meeting – May 17, 2019

What exactly is Old Timers Night, anyway? Well, let’s say that it is an annual event that occurs at our May SBARC Club Meeting. It is a special time where we can once more meet and greet our “most experienced” amateurs. These folks have paid their dues and come this far along life’s journey to a point where they can boast about having had experiences in the great hobby of Amateur Radio that most of us have only heard about. We’ve Moved!

Well, the website did! We have moved the club website to a new, much faster cloud server. Besides operating better, our website will no longer go down during extended power outages and will be much easier to maintain. If you see anything missing, don’t worry. There are a couple of things that did not make the transition smoothly, but we are identifying them and will get them fixed within a few days. Happy browsing! Volunteer radio operators needed for Fiesta Parade!

Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club will provide communications support via amateur radio to the Fiesta Parade on August 3,2018. If you are interested in assisting, please contact Rick Whitaker at rickwhtr@cox.net. There are many open positions and operators will receive free lunch after the parade! Events can be a lot of fun and you will be working with a great SBARC team to provide a very valuable public service. Due to the damage caused by the mudslides on Highway 192, the Santa Barbara Triathlon, which was scheduled for August 25, 2018, has been Officially CANCELLED. SBARC had been planning on providing communication support to this event. Mudslide and fire damage may impact several other events and our event support schedule might be less than what it normally is this year so we encourage you to sign up for Fiesta. General Club Meeting – April 20, 2016

Wayne Beckman AF6GX will be the speaker this month, presenting a “Test Bench in a Backpack” program. He will give us a talk and demonstration of very portable and powerful test equipment that is much smaller and less expensive than earlier instruments because these new devices rely on being connected to a computer to utilize the processing and display capability of the computer. When used with a laptop computer this also makes the instruments battery powered very portable. Wayne works along with Bill, W1UUQ keeping our infrastructure maintained and frequently works in remote places where it is difficult if not impossible to run back to the shop for a tool or piece of equipment. See how he makes the best use of sometimes limited space and weight so that they can get the job done. SBARC General Club Meeting Friday, April 20, 2018 at 7:30 PM Goleta Union School District Board Room 401 North Fairview Avenue in Goleta Post expires at 10:15pm on Wednesday April 18th, 2018 but will still be available in the archives.

If you can help, please try to be there by 9:30 or 10:00. Thanks! Your help will certainly be appreciated! SBARC General Meeting: August 18th 2017

If you haven’t yet tried a DMR radio, this month you will get your chance. Last month we had a great introduction to DMR presentation by Michael Rickey, AF6FB of the PAPA Radio System. This month we are going to follow up on that meeting with some DMR radio demonstrations, and a discussion on installing firmware, contact databases and programming codeplugs. For many of our members this may all sound complicated so we are going to try to take some of the mystery out of this for you and show you on the big screen how simple it is once you understand the DMR concept. We’ll also show you how we programmed a DMR HT for Dave, K9KBX to take on his upcoming European vacation. He has repeaters programmed in for 16 different cities he is going to visit, and he will be able to call back to Santa Barbara with a single PTT press. Getting into DMR is inexpensive and fun. If you are at all interested in learning more about it, please join us! SBARC General Club Meetings are held at the Goleta Union School District, 401 N. Fairview Ave. in Goleta, right across the street from the Goleta Library. Doors open at 7:00 PM and the meeting starts at 7:30 PM. Put the date on your calendar and bring a guest!
