General Club Meeting – July 21, 2023

Last month we will had a presentation from Steve Waterman K4CJX about the SHARES program. The counterpoint of the SHARES program is Winlink, so this meeting we’re are going to learn a little more about it. Winlink has become the de-facto standard for emcomm groups everywhere. It allows you to send and receive email messages using HF or VHF radio. This meeting will serve as an introduction to Winlink, what you need to use it, and how it works. We’ll get into more details about operation at a later meeting. This is an in person meeting and will also be available on Zoom and YouTube. This month we will have a presentation from Steve Waterman K4CJX. Steve is going to talk to us about the SHARES program. The SHARES (DHS CISA) high frequency (HF) radio program provides an extremely resilient means for users with a national security and emergency preparedness mission to inter-operably communicate when landline/cellular communications and the internet are unavailable. SHARES member agencies use existing HF radio resources to coordinate and transmit messages needed to perform critical functions, including those areas related to leadership, safety, maintenance of law and order, finance, and public health. SHARES provides the “E” in PACE (primary, alternate, contingency, emergency) planning for communications. We’re back! In person meetings are back to stay for awhile. Once again, we had a presenter lined up for this month but we had to reschedule until next month because of a conflict with other plans. But we’re on for April and I think you will enjoy the presentation. This month we’re going to talk about Artificial Intelligence, specifically ChatGPT. ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot that can communicate with users in natural language and provide information or assistance on a variety of topics. It is designed to simulate human conversation and provide helpful responses to users’ queries in real-time. The chatbot uses machine learning algorithms to understand user inputs and generate appropriate responses. It can be used for customer support, personal assistance, or general information seeking purposes. Like it or not, this IS the next big thing and it WILL affect you in all kinds of ways. General Club Meeting – October 21, 2022

 The October  meeting will feature a presentation by Steve Noll, WA6EJO, on antennas and propagation. This is a MUST-SEE meeting for everyone. Steve does great presentations with lots of actual hands-on examples using his collection of 10 GHz gear and visual aids. This will be a live demonstration exploring radiation patterns and polarization of a variety of antennas from ground planes to loop Yagis to helices, plus actual demonstrations of a variety of propagation phenomena including ducting, refraction, diffraction, knife edging, Fresnel zone, velocity of propagation, and more. If you would like to know more about the black magic of radio waves and how to use them, you don’t want to miss Steve’s presentation. He is an expert in the field. Steve Noll, WA6EJO, has been active in Ham Radio for the past 40 years. He pioneered 2-way Amateur Radio Laser communications in the late 1970s and operated an experimental 23 centimeter repeater and an X-Band beacon in Ventura for many years. Steve chaired several of the West Coast VHF/UHF Conferences in the 1990s where he also built and ran the antenna gain and pattern plotting range. He is a member of the Amateur Television Network and is a founding member of the MAKE Ventura makerspace. Steve retired from Advanced Photonix after 22 years as their Senior Test Engineer. We will also be hosting this meeting on Zoom, but you won’t get as much out of the presentation as you will if you attend in person! Please try to get there, you won’t regret it! Our speaker this month will be Orv Beach W6BI. Orv will be bringing us up to date on the progress of the tri-county mesh networking project. Orv is almost single-handedly promoting mesh networking to make this a robust and reliable addition to our bag of emcomm tools. Many of us have mesh nodes deployed, but most of us have not kept up with the latest firmware, equipment and buildout progress. We’re going to try our first hybrid meeting this month. We will have an in-person meeting broadcast simultaneously on Zoom. For those not able to attend in person, you will be able to check-in on Zoom. Someone at the meeting will be there to help so they can pass on questions and comments from the Zoomers. This month we’re going to talk about Winlink email for RF and watch a video introduction. Winlink has come a long way in the last few years, and Santa Barbara is way behind other clubs and groups in the tri-county area. With California facing potential blackouts this summer as well as general disaster preparation knowledge, it is time for SBARC to look into this more seriously.
