ARDF Hunt March 2000

Saturday, March 18, 2000
by Marvin Johnston, KE6HTS

The weather could not have been better for the ARDF hunt held at Lake Carneros on March 18, 2000. With sunny skies and a gentle breeze, people began arriving between 8:30 and 9:00 for the 10:30 hunt. One of the surprise competitors was Bob Cooley, KF6VSE, who came down from the Bay area to compete. Bob is an outstanding orienteer and competed on the US ARDF Team at the Portland ARDF Championships last year. We had three others come in from the Palmdale area, and quite a number from down south in addition to those from the Santa Barbara area. Joe Moell, K0OV, and his wife April, WA6OPS, stayed in Santa Barbara to help out after they gave a presentation to the Santa Barbara Amateur Radio Club Friday evening.

Map of ARDF transmitters around Los Carneros Lake.We had two classes, Beginner and Advanced, and left it to the competitors to decide which class they were in. Teams were allowed and several people took advantage of that to work together. There were five transmitters spread around a course that was a little over a mile long on the optimum route. Each transmitter was identified with an orange and white orienteering control flag. The optimum order to find the transmitters was #3, #2, #4, #1, and #5. The map shows the location of each transmitter.

Afterwards, everyone gathered at the picnic area to hear the results and enjoy a well deserved tri-tip BBQ. The results were:
