The ACR Class B EPIRB has a simple bar magnet (left side) and a hermetically sealed glass tube with internal switch contacts. When the magnet is aligned with the tube, the unit will activate. This particular design eliminates the possibility of open switch contact corrosion. The bar magnet plastic insert provides a tight seal against water intrusion into the plastic enclosure. Actually, this is not a bad design if only ACR had placarded this model with a warning to ensure the EPIRB is never placed near any strong magnetic force. - Photo by Bill Talanian, W1UUQ
